Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at john@motonfieldcapital.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A small business that is customer focused, collaborative, and derives a majority of its revenue from government, defense, and national security customers.

The business must be based in the United States, have a strong leadership team and financial standing, and a reasonable backlog of work.

Ideally:

  1. Annual revenues of $25.0 million or greater, and/or earnings/net income/EBITDA of $2.50 million or greater. If a software-as-a-service focused business, recurring revenue greater than $2.8M.
  2. A three-year history of positive cash flows
  3. Customer and mission diversity - 60% of revenue cannot come from one Navy contract supporting one specific system
  4. A business already familiar with Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and currently or potentially able to support a Facility Security Clearance (FCL)

If your business exceeds, meets, or is within range of the criteria above, I would love to learn more.

Once we connect or are introduced:

  1. We schedule a 30 minute chat to see if there is interest in talking further, and can decide to put a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in place.
  2. We spend 1-2 weeks getting to know each other and setting expectations, discussing high level financials, customer base, and more information about your business. We brainstorm what long-term growth and what your ideal transition looks like.
  3. We complete a formal Letter of Intent (LOI) outlining high level terms and agreements, and John will work with you to arrange an in person visit - where you are located.
  4. Weeks 4-16 are spent doing due diligence - followed by a formal transaction.
  5. We execute our agreed upon transition plan, while ensuring the utmost respect for teammates, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders.

Moton Field (generally pronounced “Mot’un”), located in Tuskegee, Alabama, served as the primary training site for the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. During World War II, these pilots trained rigorously at Moton Field and nearby Tuskegee Army Airfield. The Tuskegee Airmen proved their skill and valor in combat, challenging racial segregation and discrimination prevalent in the military at the time.

The Airmen went on to earn substantial honor, commendations, and recognition for their bravery and effectiveness in combat. Moton Field and the adjacent US Park Service Museum stands as a symbol of progress and perseverance, representing the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans in the military and the ongoing struggle for civil rights. It serves as a reminder of the courage and determination exhibited by the Tuskegee Airmen in overcoming adversity and breaking barriers.

Specifically in naming the fund, Moton Field represents the start of something powerful and impactful. Not just in its enabling of incredible success, but in demonstrating that when opportunities are presented, any human with determination, perseverance, and aspirations can achieve incredible results. Beyond training pilots, an often-overlooked aspect of the Tuskegee Airmen are the countless African American mechanics, weather observers, logisticians, and squadron support staff that came together as a remarkable team to support the pilots in their missions.

Personally, John appreciates the connection that Moton Field offers a defense-focused fund, as the pioneering spirit of the Tuskegee Airmen is relevant and timely. As a pilot himself, an additional connection is the Principal’s extended family are from Alabama. John remembers many trips to to Alabama while growing up and experiencing civil rights history in a direct way. Along with his work achievements around connecting underrepresented innovation in the defense industry, and his commitment to improving representation in the industry, John hopes that a successful transaction creates pathways for and inspire more underrepresented leaders in national security to aim even higher.
